Arthur Irwin "Foxy" was born in Toronto, Ont. in 1858, where he played sandlot ball before moving to Boston, Mass. and excelled at baseball at the age of 15. He entered the majors with the National League Worcester team in1880, where he hit .259 in 85 games. He later played with Providence, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington in the majors, retiring with a career average of .241 in 1889. He played the majority of his 1001 major league games as a shortstop altho he played many other positions. He revolutionized the fielding game when, while playing for Providence, he broke 2 fingers on his left hand. Not wishing to miss any games , he "made" a glove from a large driving glove, adding padding, a button at the back and sewed the 3rd and 4th fingers together. Other players soon adopted the glove, known as the Irwin glove. Irwin managed the Eastern League's Hartford team in 1921, when he died. He was elected to the Canadian Baseball HOF in 1989
