John Hiller first arrived on the major league scene with the Tigers in 1967. He had a 9-6 ( 5 wins were shutouts) record with the pennant winning Tigers in 1968 and appeared in 2 World Series games vs the Cardinals. In early 1971 he suffered a massive heart attack and after surgery left the hospital weighing 140 pounds! He missed the entire 1971 season and appeared at spring training in 1972 as a pitching coach. He persuaded Detroit personnel to let him pitch, and he eventually appeared in 24 games that year. In 1973, he had a super season, winning 10 games, his ERA was 1.44, finishing 60 games and set a major league record of 38 saves. At the end of his career in 1980, he had recorded 87 wins and 79 losses. His 1035 K's placed him 2nd to Ferguson Jenkins for a Canadian born hurler. John was born in Toronto in 1943 and was elected to the Canadian Baseball HOF in 1985. article from http://www.baseballhof.ca/
