Jack Graney was born in St.Thomas, Ont. on June 10, 1886. He arrived in the majors as a left handed pitcher with Cleveland in 1908, pitching in 2 games. He played in Cleveland's outfield from 1910 to 1922 appearing in 1402 games compiling a career average of .250. He appeared in the 1920 World Series with Cleveland as a pinch hitter vs Brooklyn. He was the 1st Canadian to pinch hitter in a World series game. Not a power hitter, this scrappy lead-off hitter twice led the league in bases on balls. In 1915, Graney was the 1st batter to ever face Boston's lefthander Babe Ruth in the majors. In 1916 he was the 1st player to bat wearing a number on his uniform in the major leagues, in a game vs Chicago. Graney broadcast the Indians games from 1932 to 1953. He was elected to the Canadian Baseball HOF in 1984.
