Russell Ford was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1883. The family moved to the US midwest
where Russell attracted much attention as a righthander. He first played in the majors
with the Yankees ( the New York team was also known as the "Highlanders" at this
time) in 1909 and started his first game in 1910, beating the Athletics 1-0, on 5 hits. He
went on to win 26 games for the 1910 Yankees, including 8 shutouts and 29 complete games
in his rookie year. He was the 1st Canadian born pitcher to win 20 games in a season. He
also won 22 games for the 1911 Yankees. Ford played in an era when the spit-ball was legal
and many pitchers used questionable tricks. Years later Ford confessed to using a
"scuffed" baseball, using a piece of emery board. Russ played with Buffalo of
the Federal League in 1914 and 1915 where he finished his career with a lifetime record of
99 wins and 71 losses. He passed away in North Carolina in 1960. He was elected to the
Canadian Baseball HOF in 1989
