Trivia

What do the following players have in common ??
Ryan Dempster, Jeff Heath, Ferguson Jenkins, George Selkirk, Larry Walker, Jeff Zimmerman
They have all be selected to the All-Star Game

Ferguson Jenkins is the only pitcher to have 3000 strikeouts, but fewer than 1000 walks. He whiffed 3192 victims while giving just 997 passes.

John Hiller His 1035 K's place him 2nd to Ferguson Jenkins for a Canadian born hurler.

Ferguson Jenkins is the only pitcher in big league history to surrender home runs to all three Alou brothers. Jesus (Giants) in July, 1967, Felipe(Braves) in April, 1968 and Matty(Cardinals) in Sept., 1971.

Jack Graney appeared in the 1920 World Series with Cleveland as a pinch hitter vs Brooklyn. He was the 1st Canadian to pinch hitter in a World series game. Not a power hitter, this scrappy lead-off hitter twice led the league in bases on balls. In 1915, Graney was the 1st batter to ever face Boston's lefthander Babe Ruth in the majors. In 1916 he was the 1st player to bat wearing a number on his uniform in the major leagues, in a game vs Chicago

Jeff Heath had more hits (199) than DiMaggio and Williams, hitting .340 with 123 RBIs, while playing for the Indians.
Heath played 14 years for teams such as Indians, Senators, Browns and Braves.

Reggie Cleveland Signed to a pro contract by the Cards in 1966. Appeared in the 1975 World Series against Reds becoming the first Canadian pitcher to start a World Series Game.

Russell Ford He first played in the majors with the Yankees ( the New York team was also known as the "Highlanders" at this time) in 1909 and started his first game in 1910, beating the Athletics 1-0, on 5 hits. He went on to win 26 games for the 1910 Yankees, including 8 shutouts and 29 complete games in his rookie year. He was the 1st Canadian born pitcher to win 20 games in a season. He also won 22 games for the 1911 Yankees. Ford played in an era when the spit-ball was legal and many pitchers used questionable tricks. Years later Ford confessed to using a "scuffed" baseball, using a piece of emery board.

Dick Fowler a right hander played 10 years in the majors, all with the Philadelphia Athletics. Fowler made his major league debut at the age of 20 against the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 13,1941. In 1942, Dick hurled all 16 innings in a 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Browns. This extra inning stint probably brought on the bursitis, which plagued Fowler during his pitching career. In Sept., 1945, Fowler hurled a no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns at Philadelphia's Shibe Park. It was his first start of the season. He was the first Canadian to hurl a no-hitter in the major leagues.

Vince Sheilds -  Pitched in 2 games for the '24 Cardinals, and in the process played with the legendary Rogers Hornsby the year he set the record for the highest single season batting average
